First, I would like to define this post. Chicken dances are the complex steps one must take to enable and disable certain aspects of their auto-s function (Ex. turn on/off the seatbelt warning, reset the -Check Engine- or -Maintenance Required- light, etc.). I would love to be the one who came up with this term but sadly the honor goes to other posters on this forum. Hopefully, the term will catch on and you-ll see other forums for different cars use the same terminology.Anyway, I know a couple for the tC and I-d like to consolidate them in this thread.

A. Turn on/off the seatbelt warning beeps
This is a nice way to disable the seatbelt warning without having to disconnect anything.
1. Make sure odometer (not trip meter) is active before starting
2. Turn key to -on- position - do not start the car just turn the key
3. Immediately after turning the key, press and hold the trip meter reset button. 4. Keep holding in button and after 10-12 sec. attach the driver-s side seatbelt. 5. A message of -b-off- (disable) or -b-on- (enable) should appear in the odometer readout to show that it was done correctly.

B. Set the interval for -maintenance required- lightApparently this -feature- is for those that forget to change their oil. The maintenance required light will illuminate to remind people to get their cars checked up, and to annoy me.
1. Make sure odometer (not trip meter) is active before starting
2. Press and hold the trip meter reset button
3. Turn key to -on- position - do not start the car just turn the key
4. The odometer readout will begin a countdown of dashes. It is assumed that the number of dashes each represent 1000 miles.
5. Release the trip meter reset button at the desired number of dashes. The dashes count down quickly and you only get one shot at it unless you want to go through this process again, so be ready to let go.
6. -0000- is then displayed. I assume this is to show you that the meter has been reset.

C. Clear the -Maintenace Required- light
Clears the -Maintenace Required- light if the person changing your oil forgot to do the above step.
1. Turn key to -on- position - do not start the car just turn the key
2. Reset both trip meters
3. Hold in the trip reset button and start the car
4. Keep holding button until -maintenance required- light disappears

D. Turn off the -needle jump-
You can do this to turn on/off the little needle jump that happens every time you start you car.
1. Make sure that a trip meter (I used A) is active - not the odometer
2. Press and hold the trip meter reset button
3. Turn key to -on- position - do not start the car just turn the key
4. After a short time a message is displayed to show you whether the -jump- is enabled or disabled. Sorry, I can-t remember exactly what is displayed but it should be plainly obvious.Well, these are the one-s I know of. Please post if I screwed up the directions or if you know of any others. I would be particularly interested in a method to make the sunroof a one-touch closer. I may just be dreaming though.

E. How to customize the text for the welcome message on the tC head unit

So you'd like to 'name' your car something gay like "2fas4u" huh? Well, you can! follow these steps:

2nd gen hu (2006+)
step 1
turn the key to 'ACC' and turn the radio on. now, turn the key off.
step 2
on the radio, press and hold 'MUTE' and while continuing to hold down 'MUTE', turn the key to 'ACC'. you should now see a horizontal line on the head unit lcd display start to flash. you can now let go of 'MUTE'.
step 3
within 15 seconds, press and hold 'PRESET 1' and turn the key off. you should now see a flashing cursor with the letter 'A' displayed.
step 4
now use the 'PRESET 3' and 'PRESET 4' buttons to change to the letters/characters you want to use. when you find the letter/character that you would like to use, press 'PRESET 6' and the cursor will move over to the next position. if you need to delete a character, press 'PRESET 5'. once you have complete your message, press and hold 'PRESET 6' for five seconds to confirm your selection.

*note*
there is a 16 character maximum for the welcome message for the 2st gen hu.
1st gen hu (2005)
step 1
turn the key to 'ACC' and turn the radio on. now, turn the key off.
step 2
on the radio, press and hold 'A' and while continuing to hold down 'A', turn the key to 'ACC'. you should now see a horizontal line on the head unit lcd display start to flash. you can now let go of 'A'.
step 3
within 15 seconds, press and hold 'M' and turn the key off. you should now see a flashing cursor with the letter 'A' displayed.
step 4
now use the '+' and '-' volume keys to change to the letters/characters you want to use. when you find the letter/character that you would like to use, press 'A' and the cursor will move over to the next position. if you need to delete a character, press 'M'. once you have complete your message, press and hold 'A' for five seconds to confirm your selection.

*note*
there is a 12 character maximum for the welcome message for the 1st gen hu.

How do you make the odometer/trip meter active with the car off?

If you-re seriously asking -how to-...i don-t know. I think it-s unpossible. but if you-re asking in regards to what I was talking about...what I meant is that you need to make sure that the trip meter is active...before you turn it off. Like I said, I don-t think it-s posisble to do anything with the power off. Except for the Chicken Dance of course of course! hahahaha!

Does disabling your seatbelt warning beeps cause the check engine light to come on?

I just disabled my seatbelt warning beep yesterday, and today my check engine light come on? I don't know if this is just a coincidence or if the check engine light came on because I disabled the seatbelt warning?

Please let me know if any of you have experienced the same problem.

Thanks,
Chad

Is it the check engine light or the maintenance light that came on? How many miles does you car have? I know when my car hit 5k the maintenance light came on and then again when it almost hit 10k.

If it is the CEL, then that's kind of strange. I've done the seatbelt thing at least 6 times, cuz you have to do it again every time you disconnect the battery. Have you done any recent mods to your car?

No, it was the "check engine" light for sure...not the maintenance light. My car has about 18k miles on it, and I have not done any modifications yet. I guess the check engine light must be something totally unrelated and I'm gonna have to take it to the dealer to scan the codes.

If you go to AutoZone they'll scan your car for free.

I had my CEL come on once, and it was just because I had accidentally left my gas cap partially untwisted. Thanks to autozone, I saved myself a 20 minute drive.

Try autozone like he said and post up what they say. Also, I think this discussion should be moved out of a sticky. Start a topic in genral topics or engine mods.

there's no chicken dances to reset your maintenance indicator light. Just turn off the car, hold the reset button, turn key to ON while holding button, then a few seconds later the light goes out.
