I did this mod about 6 months ago so I am going off old photos and knowledge. But it not that hard seeing how I did it and I had no idea what I was doing...

The following is what I used to do my trim:
*1 can of Adhesion Promoter
*2 cans of paint automotive paint (if you want your paint to "match your car") or any paint will do.
*1 can of clear coat
*flathead screwdriver
*Phillips screwdriver

BTW, your doing this under your own will and it is not my problem if you screw it up

First you need to remove the parts you want painted:
---The square trim around the shifter just push to one side and pull up, it should come right out.
---Center piece, pull both sides at one time, it should pop right off. Disconnect the heater/AC unit.
---Lower center piece, I have an automatic so I had to put it in "N" and pull the e-brake. Same thing pull both sides and it should pop right out. Disconnect the lighter. I also removed the trim from the center part that goes between the seats(cup holder) cause it was easier to paint and less to tape off.

---round air vents. I used a small thin flat head screwdriver. Just put it in the vent and pry very slowly in a few places and its out. **I put an "L" for the left vent on the back and an "R" on the back for the right one. It helped me to put R & L on everything cause I didn't want to F it up.**
---square air vents. These are a lot harder to remove. But again I used the flathead. DO NOT PRY THE SIDES!! I put it in the vent and slowly pry. Again I did this months ago so I'm rusty. Once the whole vent is out you'll have to remove the trim from the vent. Just take your time cause the clips are small and not very strong.
---The 3 gauge cover by the wheel was easy to remove. Just pull. There is a rubber piece on the bottom and I remember I took it off before painting it. I just put a piece of tape on it and wrote "top" so I would put it back on right.
---The door trim handle. That you can try to use your nails or the flat head. I think my nails worked best. Once that is off the silver ring can be removed. Go slow cause again the tabs are not strong on the silver ring.
---The door lock handle trim. ***I'd advice you NOT to remove this one. Once you start to remove this one it is a HUGE pain in a$$** Honestly I was in the middle of removing this and I got mad cause I already started it but couldn't stop. I used the flathead first to pop the cover behind the handle then unscrewed the screw. Then I used it to pry all over the place untill it came loose. Once loose behind the trim there are 2 plastic pieces that went it to the door. I moved it back and forth about 50 times untill it came free. I would not do this again to anyones car... but it was mine

All items to paint:

Next you need to clean everything very well and let dry then wipe clean with a towel or something. I scuffed up each item very lite so the paint would stick. Again I say LITE. Remove any other parts you dont want painted. I removed the ac unit and stuff cause I work so much this took me a few days to do so I needed it(you can see it is taped, in one pic, so it wouldn't fall out while driving) Tape off all parts you don't wanted painted. I used Adhesion Promoter so the paint would stick better to the parts. About 2-3 coats is good. Follow the info on the can for times between sprays. Next apply "your" color. I used 4 or 5 coats cause I wanted it just right. Again follow spray times on can.

Apply about 2 coats of clear coat and your done... well almost. Take off tape.

Put all the parts you removed back together. Then put your car back together. Next take a bunch of pics and post a DIY.(6 months late that is )

UPDATE: I just added the following painted parts: Center HVAC control knob, and the steering wheel accents.

PARTS:
1 small flathead
1 very small phillips screw driver
1 t-30 (torx) bit (6 point star bit)

---The HVAC center control knob: The control knob just pulls right out. On the sides there are a few small slots use a small flathead in there and it will pops right out.
---The steering wheel accents: These are a pain in the butt, but I just had to do it. **First you will want to disconnect the battery cause you will be handling the airbag.** On the backside of the steering wheel there are 2 small holes on either side. You need a T-30 (torx) bit (6 point star bit). These screws loosen but don't come out. I then removed the center/ airbag and just placed it on top of the wheel by the gauges. Next remove 1 screw each that holds the accents in place. Then give it them a little pull and they will pop right out. Now you can tape them off or keep going like I did cause of the steering wheel controls..... remove 3 tiny tiny tiny screws. remove the 4 small white pieces. Then use a small flathead to pry and remove the 2 controls, the "mode" button will just fall out. Now you are ready to paint it without taping it off.

BTW, if you want to save a little $, like I did, I got the Adhesion Promoter and clear coat paint from AutoZone and not Automotivetouchup.com. There prices are a little high and I saved like $20 by going to AutoZone for everything except for the "color matched paint." Another added note: you can use any kind of paint it doesn't have to be from automotivetouchup.com, it can be from Walmart.

GOOD LUCK

My second sticky

You do?

Like I said I did this months ago and I got sick of everyone asking me how I did it so a DIY was needed. If there is anything I left out PLMK so I can up date it.

Here is the thing about warranty's most people forget about or don't know.

EXAMPLE: If my radio breaks and they (the dealership) can prove it was my fault because I painted the trim then yes it would effect the warranty. As long as the dealer can "prove" what I did to my car effected that part or another part of my car then that part (not the whole car) is effected by the warranty.

Hope that helps. Now paint away.

Good thread. Just a note- I did this to mine but I just got regular old spray paint from Home Depot. It all depends on what color you want/need when it comes to matching. So don't feel like you have to stick with any type of auto paint, unless you like to stay within the auto world boundries.

Awesome write up. I'm going to attempt this soon, but I'm going to use a satin black. Need to find a good paint for that. Question though: How did you tape of the little crome rim on the door handles? Thats seems like it would be a b****.

I'm not real sure which part your talking about, but I'll see if I can help. As for the large door handle which you use to shut the car there is nothing to tape. The small silver circle pops out from the backside. As for the small handle you use to open the door that stays on the car. When you remove the trim (that I recommend you leave alone) the silver handle doesn't come off.
Hope that helped.

hmmm this is one way to do it. I dont have time to make a DIY but there is a few things i would change or advice (maybe wrong word to use)

1 Paint- I used Fusion Paint. Why? Because its used for plastic piece painting only. No clear coat.

2 Primer- All i used was mineral spirits to clean the plasic. Also if you mess up or dont like the way it looks you can use this to take off the paint and it will be as if nothin was painted at all.

Other than that good DYI!!!
