Let me start by saying i dont do this never have, never will. I was riding in my friends car the other day and the transmission shifter (automatic) was close enough like our cars except it was a straight line not the little squiggly thing. And he was starting in L and shifting it manually. is that bad for the transmission? i thought it was but his dad who is some kind of self proclaimed transmission genious says its not. I was just wondering if it is or not.

His dad is an idiot, never listen to him again. Yes that IS bad for the transmission.. If they wanted to be able to shift on their own they should have purchased manual cars :c

^^ pretty much what all they said..

the ecu itself knows if you wanna go fast by how hard you push down on the gas...

shifting liek that is just unnecessarily wearing down parts.. frankly dumb.

Like 10 minutes ago I was going to answer "Of course its bad!" But then I thought, "why?"

So I did some research. Everywhere I have been reading, people say its not bad for the transmission because you are simply changin the gears for the car.

It doesn't sit right with me, but I cant explain why it would be bad for the car.

ok well ive asked this question to several car dealerships including Hollywood scion and Toyota of stuart and they said no aslong as u dont redline it or downshift like to 1st going 50 .. i do this all the time not as much shifting from L to 2 to 3 but i downshift alot which makes me use more gas and puts more stress on the transmission but not a biggie

I couldn't find the post either

both Web, Vicious and I would agree you shouldn't shift an auto like a manual unless your car was meant to do so, like a tiptronic or xtrontic or the + - you see on the Mazda 3

you may get away with it for a while, but over time your automatic is going to have bad shift timing

it puts a lot of stress on flexible parts of the automatic transmission that is meant only for normal daily driving

my best advice: don't do it

Yea, but its an automatic. Its not you thats suppose to be changing the gears, its the car, appose to a manual transmission where you do the shifting.

so.. despite me already knowing the answer... do you know why they put in that option to lower gears anyway?

(i.e. why would anyone shift it to 2 or L?)

just for more power i think

edit: also some high end cars automatically start in second to save gas, not sure about regular cars though.

I think gear 2 is used for when your vehicle is being towed. And gear L is for hills.

I said I think. I wasnt positive, but I did read it on a yahoo forum. This is what it said:

Leave it on D, Manufacturers aren't even sure of how to properly use the gears on a vehicle and you can tell from their owners manual. In the manual they always recommend to use 2 when towing a vehicle as for L usually says use at low speeds and state certain KM or Mi. Which does not really answer anything else, as how about when you get stuck can you use L or does it produce too much power and the wheels will spin over the max speed. What I get from the vehicles owners manual is keep it in D at all times. Maybe in the future they can improve the owners manuals to actually help on using the vehicle. GOOD LUCK AND have fun with your vehicle

got this from wikipedia

"Use the lower gear positions when descending hills. This lowers the amount of braking necessary to slow down and helps keep brakes cool. The same may be desirable when climbing a hill as it can stop the transmission from constantly shifting between gears."

so you got it from another forum which doesn't have much of a solid foundation for truth.... it's like trying to get solid facts from wikipedia...

not saying all of it is wrong... but it is definitely not all correct.

i dunno.. but last time i read my owner's manual it had correct information.
